Last Evening in Waterton Lakes

I'm adding a posting for today because I want to share our adventures during the last evening in Waterton Lakes. We walked up the steep 1-mile trail called Bear's Hump for a beautiful view of the Waterton Lakes area.

Amanda and I headed down the mountain before Vince and Kasey. We passed by a couple who said they just saw a bear about 30 feet off the trail about 2 switchbacks down from us. Amanda and I continued, cautiously, talking loudly and looking around in search of this bear. We got to the trail head with no bear sightings and waited for Vince and Kasey.

They arrived about 30 minutes later with their encounter stories. They were walking down, cautiously because they had been warned by the couple as well, when Vince spotted the black bear on the trail about 50 feet in front of them. Kasey didn't see it because she was looking at the uneven ground she was hiking on. Vince grabbed her shoulder to stop her. When she saw the bear she reached for her camera to take pictures as she started walking backwards, away from the bear.

(Picture coming soon)

The bear walked into the brush but because of all the switchbacks it was hard to see where he went. They waited about 15 minutes and then another couple came down the trail. They figured it was safer going down with a larger group so they cautiously resumed their hike and made it down safely.

We were going to go to a ranger talk about bears but due to the delay on the trail we missed it. We went out for pizza instead.

  1. Sounds like you could give the talk about bears.
